Danyang: Korea’s Most Scenic Riverside Escape

Tucked into Korea’s landlocked center, Danyang is the kind of place that makes you reach for your camera every few minutes. Set on a bend of the Namhan River and ringed by limestone cliffs, this small Chungbuk town packs in more scenery — and more adventure — than places ten times its size.
Dodamsambong & the river views
The town’s icon is Dodamsambong — three rocky peaks rising straight out of the river, best seen from the riverside walk or a short cruise. Just behind it, the natural stone arch of Seokmun frames the valley like a window.
Thrills with a view
Danyang is Korea’s unofficial capital of paragliding — launch from the hills and drift over the river. Not into heights? The Mancheonha Skywalk juts out 80m above the water with a glass floor, and Gosu Cave hides a maze of limestone formations just outside town.
A mountain temple & garlic everything
Don’t miss Guinsa, a vast temple complex stacked dramatically up a forested valley. And before you leave, try Danyang’s famous garlic — it turns up in everything from fried chicken to bread.
Good to know
- Getting there: about 2 hours from Seoul by train (Cheongnyangni → Danyang).
- Best season: autumn for foliage; summer for water activities.
- Tip: rent a bike along the river path for the best views.
