Jeju Island: Korea’s Ultimate Slow-Travel Escape

Jeju is where Koreans go to exhale. A volcanic island an hour’s flight south of Seoul, it runs on tangerines, ocean air, and a slower clock. Skip the checklist and let the island set the pace.
Catch a sunrise crater
Seongsan Ilchulbong — “Sunrise Peak” — is a 180m tuff cone rising straight out of the sea. The climb takes about 25 minutes and the dawn view over the crater is the island’s signature moment.
Walk the Olle Trails
A 437km network of coastal footpaths rings the island. You don’t need to hike all of it — Route 7 between Oedolgae and Wolpyeong is a stunning half-day on its own.
Meet the haenyeo
Jeju’s haenyeo (“sea women”) free-dive for shellfish without oxygen tanks, a UNESCO-recognized tradition. Watch them surface near Seongsan, then eat the freshest abalone of your life at a seaside stall.
