While crowds flock to Gyeongju in the east, the old Baekje capitals of <strong>Gongju<\/strong> and <strong>Buyeo<\/strong> stay refreshingly quiet, even though they share the same UNESCO World Heritage status.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gongju: fortress on the river<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gongju\u2019s centerpiece is <strong>Gongsanseong<\/strong>, a hilltop fortress whose earthen and stone walls loop for 2.6km above the Geum River. The walk along the ramparts takes about an hour and is stunning in autumn. Nearby, the <strong>Royal Tombs of Songsan-ri<\/strong> include the intact Tomb of King Muryeong \u2014 one of the most important archaeological finds in Korean history.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Buyeo: the last capital<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A short drive south, Buyeo was Baekje\u2019s final capital.
