Occupying the rugged northeast, it\u2019s where the country\u2019s highest mountains meet the East Sea, delivering world-class hiking, powder-snow ski resorts, pine-fringed beaches, and some of Korea\u2019s most beloved comfort food \u2014 often within a single day\u2019s drive.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seoraksan &amp; Sokcho<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crown jewel is <strong>Seoraksan National Park<\/strong>, a wonderland of granite peaks famous for its blazing autumn foliage. Easy trails lead to waterfalls and a giant bronze Buddha, a cable car saves your legs, and serious hikers tackle the steep climb up Ulsanbawi. Base yourself in the coastal city of <strong>Sokcho<\/strong>, where you can eat fresh seafood and ride a hand-pulled ferry to the refugee-settled Abai Village (see our full Seoraksan &amp; Sokcho guide).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gangneung &amp; the coffee coast<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Down the coast, <strong>Gangneung<\/strong> is the East Sea\u2019s most beloved city break \u2014 host of the 2018 Winter Olympics and famous for its <strong>Anmok coffee street<\/strong>, where dozens of cafes line the beach. Add the calm waters of Gyeongpo Lake and the historic Ojukheon house, and it\u2019s an easy, photogenic getaway, now just two hours from Seoul by KTX.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ski country: Pyeongchang<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In winter, Gangwon is Korea\u2019s snow capital. <strong>Pyeongchang<\/strong> and its big resorts \u2014 Yongpyong and Alpensia \u2014 anchor the country\u2019s ski scene, and the serene mountain temple of <strong>Woljeongsa<\/strong>, with its fir-tree forest path, is magical under snow.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chuncheon &amp; Nami Island<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Closer to Seoul, <strong>Chuncheon<\/strong> is the gateway to <strong>Nami Island<\/strong>, a tree-lined river isle made famous by Korean dramas and perfect for a leisurely stroll.
